Chandra Taal is a popular destination for trekkers and campers. The lake is accessible on foot only for few months in a year.

Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or Chandra Tal, is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains of screed overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. Situated in the Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India), Chandra Taal is a popular destination for trekkers and campers.
The lake is accessible on foot only for few months in a year, from May to August. A vast meadows, is the camping site on the banks of the enchanting lake. During springtime, it is carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wild flowers. A clear stream of water flows out of the lake. During the day, the lake appears Prussian blue in color, and a greenish tinge appears towards the evening.
The lake is situated on a plateau (Samudra Tapu) overlooking the Chandra River which originates from a glacier near Bara-lacha-la.
Day -1: Reception at Manali
Day -2:  Manali-Preeni- Setan
Day -3:  Setan – Chikka 
Day -4: Chikka- Balu Ka Ghera
Day - 5: Over Hampta Pass (4270 metres)- Chattru
Day - 6: Chattru – Chotta Darra
Day - 7:  Chotta Darra – Batal
Day - 8:  Batal – Chandertal
Day - 9:  Stay At Chandertal
Day - 10: Chandertal - Tokpoyongma
Day - 11: Tokpoyongma  - Tokpogongma
Day - 12: Trek to Baralacha La (4950 metres) - Manali




Day -1: Reception at Manali
Welcome and reception at Manali. Check into hotel and visit Manali in evening.
Day -2: Manali-Preeni- Setan
We drove to the village of Preeni from where we begin our climb towards the picturesque village of Setan. Camp outside the village.



Day -3: Setan  - Chikka 

We begin early and crossing a few streams we go on a boulder-strewn path towards our next campsite. We camp on an extensive meadow.
Day -4: Chikka- Balu Ka Ghera
Today the climb is steep and can be tiring as we head towards the base of the Hampta Pass and reach our campsite on a sandy strip beside a mountain stream. Camp overnight.
Day - 5: Over Hampta Pass (4270 metres)- Chattru
The climb to the pass is again a steep one and once on the pass you get spectacular views of the northern mountain peaks of Lahaul and Spiti. We reach the tiny roadside camp of Chattru by late evening. 



Day - 6: Chattru – Chotta Darra

Today the trek is along the Spiti highway. Our next stop is another roadside settlement of Chotta Dara. There is a seasonal teashop here and an old Rest house. Camp nearby.
Day - 7: Chotta Darra – Batal
Today we continue along the road and walking along the Chandra River reach the next tiny settlement and make shift Dhabha and tea stall at Batal. Camp near the makeshift stall on an extensive grassy plain on the banks of the Chandra river.
Day - 8: Batal – Chandertal
A little ahead of the tea stall is a rough track leading north. While the highway continues to the Kunzum Pass and on to Spiti, this road leads to the beautiful mountain lake. Far below you can see the silvery Chandra River meandering towards Lahaul. We reach the lake by early evening. Camp on the shores of this mesmerising lake.
Day - 9: Stay At Chandertal
Rest day at Chandratal. There are great views of towering barren mountains all round this crystal clear water body. Camp on the shores of Lake. 
Day - 10: Chandertal - Tokpoyongma
We leave early toady as we have to ford an icy mountain stream which can become dangerously high later in the day. Our expert mountain guide leads the way and after crossing the torrent we walk foe about an hour before setting up camp.
Day - 11: Tokpoyongma – Tokpogongma
This is another icy torrent which we cross early and then walk up the barren valley. There are numerous mountain streams flowing down these barren hillsides and we reach camp by afternoon.
Day - 12: Trek to Baralacha La (4950 metres) – Manali
The day starts off with a steep ascent to the top of the ridge above Topko Gongma, which takes around half an hour. The trail then negotiates a rock field offering the most fantastic views of the Koa range peaks to the southwest. We cross another mountain stream before reaching Baralacha La. After a challenging walk, we go by the twin passes of Baralacha Pass, which is an important spot on the trade route as roads from Spiti, Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahoul converge here. On the northwest side lies the Bhaga river, while the Chandra river flows from the southeast. Nearby will be the campsite at Baralacha La. You also see from here the beautiful emerald lake Suraj Tal. we stop here for our last night in the mountains, reminiscing on our achievements. we drive off-road to Manali for about 170 km. We arrive back in town after a long drive and then you will proceed to your hotel or next destination. Our outdoor team will depart the troop here with good wishes and with hopes to visit again and again for more trekking in unexplored Himalaya.
